For those who are not familiar with it, the Sanibel Island Writer’s Conference, held every year for the past decade in November on the gorgeous and weird-bird-filled island of Sanibel off the western coast of Florida, is a fantastic four-day get-together of writers, songwriters, and aspiring writers and songwriters.  I’ve been part of a lot of conferences in my days, but the two times I’ve taught at the SIWC have been the most fun of all of them by far.  I’m part of the faculty again this year, but that shouldn’t stop you from coming, because the presenters who are running workshops are otherwise unbelievable.  The workshop I’m “teaching” is called “Humor Outside the Humor Piece,” and it’s about adding humor to longer pieces of both fiction and non-fiction (the premise is that you don’t have to be funny in the humor piece or SNL skit way to be funny–personally I come up with a good idea for a humor piece about once a year).  The dates this year are November 5-8.  I hope that if you’re anywhere near the area (or even if you aren’t) you’ll consider coming down and saying hello.  Registration is now open.
